Chapter Seventeen

Jessica and Kevin sat in the Institute room, watching intently. “He may blow this, after all,” Kevin said. Jessica wanted to object, but her gut said the same thing. Alice’s arousal had gone from 6 to 7 when Chris tied her to the bedpost, consistent with the mingled shame and confusion of the collar, the lingerie, the crawling, and finally Gadden’s coarse, almost brutal words. Now, at Chris’ tenderness, it shot to 10, and the ten flashed.

“Recalibrator,” Kevin said a little grimly. “If she drops hard when Gadden comes in we may lose him.”

“She won’t,” Jessica said. “Didn’t you see how she spiked when they talked about morganatic marriages? You read the flash from the assessors, right?”

“Skimmed it,” Kevin said, a slight twist of his totally gorgeous mouth admitting that he hadn’t really done his due diligence when the Institute had written up five hundred words on morganatic marriage in response to Gadden’s unexpected use of the term and circulated it to all concerned parties within five minutes of the word’s appearance in the datastream.

“Arousal by the inequality is a given,” Jessica said. “It’s in her metadata, and it’s confirmed by the observations today. Sarah’s even got a theory about what she was thinking when she read Pride and Prejudice, and it fits with level 8 or 9 during sex, and with easy orgasm after or even during. But…”

“But that’s not the real problem,” Kevin agreed.

They both looked at Alice on the screen, curled up on Gadden’s big bed in her lacy white lingerie, the dark collar around her neck and the silver leash securing her to the lathe-turned walnut post. Chris had departed after the kiss and the whisper, and now Alice chewed on her cheek, a very uncertain expression on her face. Her arousal had fallen back to 7.

Kevin went on, “The real problem is her falling in love with Chris. If she falls in love, she may not be able to obey Gadden, and he may smell a rat. And rats at Gadden Communications disappear.” The Guard’s previous two attempts to infiltrate Gadden’s organization had resulted in dead guardsmen.

“I disagree just a little, sir. She was always going to fall in love with Chris—that’s why Sarah chose him. It’s the way she’s falling in love that might put her and the mission in danger. I’m sure he said what he said just on instinct and on alpha rage—he wants her for himself, the way any dominant would. But if he can’t make it clear to her tomorrow that her feelings for him should make her obey her owner, rather than defy him, we could be in trouble. Should I message Sarah?”

Kevin said, “Definitely, sweetheart,” but at that moment a message from Sarah arrived in the lower right of Jessica’s second screen.
